Nellis Air Force Base

Nellis AFB,Home of the Fighter Pilot, is an aviation combat training facility in SouthernNevada, just eight miles Northeast of Las Vegas, and is the largest singleemployer in Southern Nevada.The base wasestablished by the Army in 1941 as McCarran Field and eventually went throughcommand and name changes to become Las Vegas Army Airfield in 1942, Las VegasAir Force Base in 1948, and finally, Nellis AFB in 1950. During the Korean War,those trained at Nellis AFB were directly responsible for the 14-1 kill ratioof the F-86 against the MiG-15. The base is part of the Air Force's Air CombatCommand and has more squadrons than any other USAF base. They are also thebusiest Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) facility in the US with 24 hourtraffic. In addition to combat training, the base also provides training forstrike forces. The 57th Wingis the base's home unit, serving as the operational element of the center.
