George Washington University

George Washington University's maincampus is located in the beautiful and historic Foggy Bottom in Washington DC andis just a few short blocks from the White House. It began in 1821 as ColumbiaCollege by an Act of Congress to create a private institution of higherlearning in the nation's capital where future leaders could train and learn,and in 1904 it became George Washington University. Today, nearly 20,000students attend GWU and approximately half of those are undergraduates. At theheart of this private university are the Gelman Library and the UniversityYard, but recognizable landmarks can be found all over campus such as theUniversity Gates, the Tempietto, and the bronze hippo statue.
